Orchestra Our orchestra department has scored a superior rating of 1 at all UIL concerts and sight reader contests for twenty-three years. This is a perfect score across the board! Our orchestra consists of the Advanced, Intermediate, Beginning levels as well as an ensemble class. Orchestra students in UIL Solo and Ensemble, UIL Concert and Sightreading, UIL Region Orchestra, School Concerts, and are in demand throughout the district, city, state and nationally as a premiere orchestra.

Jazz Band Our Jazz band is well known throughout the city and receives numerous invitations to play for outside events.

Band department consists of the Symphonic, Honor, and Beginning bands.

Piano classes range from entry level to advanced. Each student studies scales, technical exercises, method books (foundation learning), solos, duets, and participates in fun and exciting ensemble pieces with their class!

Mariachi studies Mariachi music is a time honored tradition with a rich culture of heritage. Students learn to sign, play and perform Mariachi in its origin of strolling musicians. Both beginning and advanced level classes are available for students. Come join this time-honored tradition of Las Mariachis rich in culture, la musica and fun!

Guitar classes consists of regular classroom music assignments as well as homework. Students must practice at home in order to keep up with classwork. Students are graded on their ability to play the assignments or song using correct rhythm, fingering and technique. They are required to practice at home for at least 5 minutes a day, increasing to 15 minutes for intermediate and advanced.

Handbells combines the teamwork of band; the rhythm of a jazz ensemble; creativity of an orchestra; and the personal individualism of a pianist. Johnston's handbell program is more than 20 years old.
